Connecting Kids to Community and Communities to Kids

There are a number of great mentoring programs in the United States.  Yet, most of them focus on the singular aspect of one, positive relationship with an older, mature citizen of the community.  This is a great goal and important all by itself.  However, LIFECoaches takes a slightly different tact because most of our work is with troubled youth or youth in crisis (expelled, incarcerated, or dealing with addictions).  While recognizing the crucial importance of relationship, LIFECoaches seeks to add a mentoring component that builds personal character in the context of a caring adult community and self-motivation through acts of community service.

Our primary goal is to help youth "self-initiate communities of compassion" wherever they go. We state this simply to young people by saying: "You will never be unwanted if you spend your life learning to unlock the potential of others."

LIFESkills Curriculum

The LIFESkills curriculum highlights the following areas:

• The fundamentals of personal change and the crucial traits needed in lifelong personal development;
• The development of a personal vision and values that will lead to well-being;
• Translating a vision into goals and weekly tasks that can be committed to paper and tracked for effectiveness;
• Using vision and values to make decisions and deal with conflict;
• Developing healthy relationships that compliment your vision and values;
• Seeking the work that you love and making lifelong educational choices.

LIFECoaches (Mentor) Training

LIFECoach training is an eight-hour program that will teach a person the following skills:

• Identifying systemic cultural problems that leave a gap in character education (understand the why's in order to understand the how-to's);
• Fundamentals of developing a healthy relationship with a troubled youth or adult;
• Basic applied motivational theory;
• Assisting others in goal development and character education;
• The thin line between enablement and empowerment - how to help without hurting;
• The importance of service in character development.
